Winners for Doomben, 7/11/20
What a week it has been! What started last Saturday as a crowd less Derby Day, built into Cup Day. A memorable State of Origin, Oaks Day and some election in America whereby is there even a president? We somehow get to the grand final of the Flemington Carnival. Stakes Day.
Well punters if you are still in front, you deserve a medal. But the job is not done, winners must be found on grand final day.
Doomben the tough bastard backs up for its third meeting in a week. Currently rated a Soft 5 would not be surprised to see a Good 4 by Saturday. Rail out .5m, the track should play fair enough, but maybe a slight advantageous to front runners.
Race 3: Benchmark 72 2200m (1:05pm)
This race I can only see there being three winning chances. Populist from the Gary Duncan camp is a good genuine stayer, loves it second up, the track and the distance. With a 3kg claimer on, he will most likely and take a lot of beating. Fields of Yulong has been a model of consistency since moving up north. Everything on paper looks as though it has found its race.
The only concern is that he has only won one race from fourteen goes. Finally, Traduce, in great form winning its last two, steps up in grade but with barrier 4 and Byrne on board, it is hard to see it missing the top three. Box these three into a trifecta, should be getting a return.
Betting Play: (1/8/9) Boxed Trifecta.
Race 7: Class 6 1350m (3:46pm)
Desert Lord lines up here for the Vandyke yard and Steph Thornton. Last start beaten .4 by arguably Queensland's inform galloper The Harrovian. He will probably settle back which won’t hurt from barrier eight. This fella is a classy galloper who I believe will win many races up here. He finds a decent field, but most of his competitors are staying types.
As a result, I expect a good tempo, and this fella should be too good for them here. It’ll take a good horse to beat him over the 1350m and up against this field, I don’t believe they will. We have to wait until Race 7, but I can’t see this bloke losing.
Betting Play: Desert Lord $2.30
Race 8: Open Quality Handicap 1350m (4:30pm)
Some smart judges tipped against this bloke last week, and I still can’t understand why. Anyway, he has pulled up a treat and heads into this race ready to win. Yes, that is Emerald Kingdom! This is not an easy race, with the likes of Boomsara, Snitch, Get Stuck In and Love You Lucy.
I just think this bloke meets horses who have been disappointing for their standards, or horses resuming who need further. And of the horses he met last start, I can’t see them turning the tables. Did all the work last start, goes up 1.5kg but is fitter. Super form at the track and distance. Needs a bit of luck from the barrier, but again should be too good. Hopefully, we have a fill-up in the race before and can double down if the worst does happen Emerald will save us.
Betting Play: Emerald Kingdom $2.90
