The two best Melbourne Cups in my lifetime

It'll be a funny old running of the Melbourne Cup this year with no crowds on track @ Flemington.

I am sure like most people, every year on cup eve I go back and look at some of the best Melbourne Cups in recent history.

In my time, there has been two stand outs, you can probably guess where I am heading with this. I don't think any of this will overly surprise.

2002 it was the emotional tale of Media Puzzle. Dermott Weld bought him over for the big race and threw Damien Oliver on board.

We all know the story, Damien's brother Jason - a jockey himself - dying after a fall from a horse whilst riding in the week leading up.

Damien decided he would take his ride on Media Puzzle and fulfil his commitments and well, as they say, the rest is history.

Wayne Wilson, the great race caller, he absolutely nailed it and everyone in Australia was riding Media Puzzle home with Olly.

If you don't get chills watching the replay, then you're made of different stuff to me!

Now the other great instalment of the Melbourne Cup in my time is of course when the great mare Makybe Diva won in 2005.

Carrying 58kgs, that was of course her 3rd win in a row in the great race and Greg Miles coined the phrase, 'a champion becomes a legend'.

Didn't Glen Boss just give her an absolute peach of run in that?

In fact Bossy's three rides for the three wins on the Diva are three of the great rides you'll see. I think she jumped about $3 on that day, everyone was on!

To think we've had Makybe Diva, Black Caviar and Winx in the space of a 15 year period simply means we've been spoilt, very spoilt.

So who wins the great race in 2020?

I think there's 5-6 chances, we'll have a full preview of the day at Flemington up in the morning!
