The Mock Racing Club’s Saturday Shakedown 20/02/2021

We are back to shake down this weekend’s cards and try and find some winners amongst the massive Group 1 line-ups. Last week was real heartbreaking stuff, as all 4 of our main tips finished in the top three, barely a couple of lengths away from the win. As we said, there are plenty of group level races this weekend and if you want to hear our full tips and analysis, you can listen to the TMRC Podcast on Spotify! Now, enough talking, let’s get stuck in.

Best Bet at Randwick

Race 3 – Subedar - $3.50 Win

Moderately paced 1400 metre race with only Yao Dash running to the front. Ziegfield runs from the back in his Australian debut, after a stellar French career. It will be really interesting to see how he goes, but I can’t have my money on him until I see how he fairs on Aussie tracks, but I will respect it if you back him. However, I think the joint favourite Subedar has the edge. Doesn’t have heaps of wet experience but recently he ran at Randwick on a soft deck and was really close behind All Time Legend, and we all know how good that horse is. So, based on that form I’ll be backing Subedar.

Best Bet at Caulfield

Race 1 – Defibrillate - $2.10 Win

2000m to start, Fast paced race. Wolfe should lead up here with Blenheim Palace behind. Aussie Nugget, Defibrillate and Dawson Diva will be down the back of the field and the rest in the midfield. Defibrillate is just great horse going for 4 in a row here on Saturday. This race is definitely the hardest one he has faced in this prep, so it will be interesting to see how the stable and Billy Egan go about this race in terms of settling position. Definitely going to be hard to beat and will be looking to redeem itself after the dead heat debacle, hopefully it is able to win by a couple of lengths this time.

Best Each Way Bet

Rosehill Race 8 – Starla - $8 Win/$2.70 Place

Massive 16 horse field to finish the day here, interestingly they almost all like the midfield. Only Canasta will go forward just like last week but I expect the same late fade in the final straight. Lackeen will be interesting after his impressive French form, but how will he fair in Australia is the question. Much like Ziegfield, I can’t comfortably back it without seeing how he runs in race conditions in Australia. Instead, I’ll see if Starla can finally win one for once. 5 runs at Rosehill 4 placings and a 6th so far this prep, so hopefully at $11 to win and $3.50 to place Starla can win the big one.

The Mock’s Roughie Alert

Caulfield Race 4 – Spanish Reef - $21 Win/$3.80 Place

This mare is first up and ready to get stuck in to what might be one of her last preps this late on in her career. Has shown some real fire before and if she brings that fire, this is a race she can grab just her 8th career win. I expect her to sit just outside of Sovereign Award in the first half, before storming home in the final straight. Would be great to see this old girl get it done, fingers crossed.

The Mock Multi Madness

Best Bet Multi - $7.35

Combine Subedar and Defibrillate into a multi and if they both win; you’ll collect a lovely $7.35 odd multi.

Around The Grounds Multi - $3.50

We go around the grounds once more, remember to take these as single win bets and combine them all into this place multi that pays $3.50. Of course, Subedar and Defibrillate take up our NSW and VIC slots. We head to South Australia at Morphettville and in the eighth race we hope that Long Arm provides the goods. In QLD, at the controversial Eagle Farm, I reckon The Stifmeister is just a hilarious name for a horse and hopefully will win for us, if not place. Finally, in the at Ascot, in WA, Cuballing seems to be a good bet and as a result, we will back him in.

Just For Fun Multi - $62.10

This one is for a bit of fun and a spare fiver if you have it. We are going to try and combine all three Caulfield Group 1 races and if we get it right, we’ll be cheering come Saturday night. We’ll go Probabeel in the Futurity, Enthaar in the Blue Diamond and Anders in the Oakleigh Plate. Fingers crossed they all get up!

Well punters, that’s the Saturday Shakedown for the week, good luck to all of you out there and we hope that by Saturday night we have funded a few of your beers. Remember, however, to know your limits and ALWAYS gamble responsibly.
