It's a sensational weekend of sport and the racing is red hot with some superstars making their return to the track. The winner of the Feehan Stakes gets the golden ticket into the Cox Plate, now set down for 24th October, same day as the AFL Grand Final in Brisbane. Don't try and contact me that day.
There's some good bets across the country this weekend, let's find the winners.
Nothing better than a Saturday of racing at the Valley. We're likely to be racing on a good track and there's a couple of nice bets. Now, Race 4, if we were playing on a rain effected track, Junipal would be an absolute moral and would jump odds on. $2.40 on a firm track, I am still prepared to take. Very good run first up behind the talented Showmanship, it'll just need a bit of luck from the inside, hoping it doesn't get too far back, albeit there is good speed in the race. Looks to have superior form to the others, danger might be Odeon second up and back on top of the ground.
The best bet in Melbourne is clearly Surprise Baby in the Feehan, Race 8 on the card. The money has come early for Sircconi and Harbour Views, but if we get an even track, the Baby should zoom home over the top here with Williams on board. It ran home with great late sectionals in this race last year and you get the feeling it might be targeting a Cox Plate in 2020, prior to the Melbourne Cup. $2.90, we might get better if the track pattern isn't suiting, I'll be on regardless.
How exciting, the return of Nature Strip. Sizzling in trials but sometimes suspect first up. Just a 6 horse field, it looks a fairly straight forward exacta. NS will fly, J Mac will let the handle bars down and it will zoom away, Gytrash will run second and maybe Splintex up for third. $1.40 is short for the favourite, I might take the exacta, but just looking forward to seeing the big beast back in action.
Feature race in Sydney is the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes. Like most years, it's a Chris Waller-athon. This year, just measly 9 runners for Mr Waller and I think he's got the winner. This was a hidden gem, the first up run of Mister Sea Wolf. Now second up, out in trip, well drawn and gets back on to a good surface. Nash Rawiller on, this ticks all the boxes! $7.50 is an absolute spoil in a race with a long tail.
Don't miss the last either, Masked Crusader going around. Disappointed some last start, not me. That could be the best get out stakes ever!
Tough day in sunny Brisbane and whilst the shortie in the first might be too good, not going to have any investments until Race 5 on the card. Respecting Cloak, but $1.70 seems poison. Going to back my old favourite, Reckless Choice each-way here. $6 is good value for a horse that boasts good stats at the track and trip, likes a good track and has 5 wins from 10 starts over the 1600m. Confident here that he'll at least run a drum with young Justin Huxtable on board, the kid is riding in great form.
Last race of the day in Brisbane, going to back a horse that will be rolling along out in front at juicy odds, Parko. He knows only one speed, flat out. Wiggins on board, love Wiggo on a front runner, albeit he normally wins a hatful up north, but expecting him to give Parko a nice squeeze early and lead on his ear. It will be a matter of whether he has a kick and can hold on. Hard Stride will come across from the outside and might pressure the leader, if they happened to scratch Hard Stride, I'll be even more confident with Parko. $16, you beauty!!
Couldn't find anything in Adelaide this weekend, if I had a gun to my head, I would back Domination in Race 2 to lead and win against a few 1st-uppers. But little confidence.
Good luck, good punting and as always, gamble responsibly!
