The smell of Coronvavirus and spring in the air, just a hint, we're still a couple of weeks away from the good horses making their return. I write this weekend preview with news just breaking that Group 1 winning horse, Scales of Justice has suffered a heart attack and passed on. The highs and lows of racing, terrible thing to happen and thoughts with connections and trainer, Lindsey Smith.
Time to jump in and find some winners, let's see if we can make some bank!
Racing seemingly goes on unaffected despite the COVID crisis deepening across Victoria. We're at headquarters on Saturday with the track currently rated soft. No rain in the forecasts, likely racing on something with the string out, maybe an upgrade on race day? First bet is probably the best bet all day which comes up in race 3, short price favourite, Alcyone. I'll be shocked if this doesn't win, has to carry the 61kg's but that's only one and a half over the bottom weight. $1.85 looks nice, chips in.
Alcyone competitive with Cherry Tortoni last time out, Johnny Get Angry in third.
Tricky start to the quaddie in Melbourne, just shopping around for a couple at odds later in the day. Waiting until Race 8, $7 about Creedence which boasts a fairly good record over 2000m. Each way odds are good here, last start at Caufield this thing was held up on the turn and flew home late with some very tidy sectionals. Looks as though it'll be going back again from the barrier on Saturday but so long as they can make ground up the middle, I think it has a strong chance.
Last race of the day, normally you'd look at barrier 17 and be turned off. Not down the straight! Could be in the best part of the track, the always underrated, I'm Telling Ya. Dean Yendall has a great association with this thing, if the pattern suits, expect this to firm in big time and be strong late over the 1200m.
Racing at Ipswich, not the Ipswich Cup but we get the Eyeliner as the feature race on the card. Keeping our powder dry early until Race 5 of the day, the Godolphin trained, Wren's Day. Beaten 1.5L by Soxagon last start reads well for this with Thy Kingdom Come behind it in third. Think the only possible danger might be Right or Wrong which has to lump the big weight. Wren's Day, barrier 3 with Mallyon on board will do me.
Race 7 is the feature of the day, the aforementioned, Eyeliner Stakes. Deep Image was scratched out of last week's race at the Sunshine Coast, presumably due to the bad barrier and what happens here? It draws the carpark again, barrier 14 of 14. Despite that, I am putting it on top again, I think this is an easy race than last week and it is clearly the class runner of the field. Plenty of speed in this race, I am hoping Steph Thornton can slot in one off the fence and let horses like Tarzan, Fiery Heights and Boomsara go hard in front. The danger from the back, probably Sharpe Hussler, a favourite of mine at good odds, but it's Deep Image on top, praying for a gun ride!
Sydney's mid-week metro meeting at Warwick Farm was abandoned due to COVID fears. If we're on, we are on the Kenso track this Saturday, currently rated a Heavy track and likely to stay around that range, maybe into a Soft 7 if we're lucky.
Three bets on the Sydney card for me, one that we got stuck into last start is Tailleur. Got it's nose down right on the line, much to the relief of myself and my legion of loyal followers! Should be winning again at the short quote in Race 3.
Across to Race 6, a horse that has done it's fair share of travelling but never runs a bad race, Thy Kingdom Come. Back from QLD after a few runs, including a win north of the border, Nash Rawiller jumps on from a good gate Saturday and the $6 looks a nice price. Admittedly I don't think we want it too wet for him but each way all day.
The following race in Sydney, what about the win of Spaceboy last start? Hasn't he started to put things together. Enormous last start, can't see him stopping here. Granted, there is a fair bit of pace in this race, I think Spaceboy will sit just in behind a really hot speed and be too good, I am stilling getting over his last start win!
For those in Radelaide, two bets for me. I am sticking with my old mate Flop in Race 2. Good each way value and should be fit now and ready to storm down the outside in a fairly weak race. The other bet, the impressive first starter from last time out, Hypersonic in Race 7. Draws the pole and should be in the first couple and hard to beat, looks to have a bright future.
Best on the day, get it early at Flemington, Alcyone. Good luck and as always, gamble responsibly!
