Godolphin's Taileur got his nose down just on the line last week, much to the relief of our loyal followers and the majority of favourite backers around the country. The other one we liked, Chapada, well we got that one wrong didn't we. Let's look at this weekend's off-season racing programs around the country and find some winners.
Bit of rain and Coronavirus in the air in Melbourne this week, Caulfield currently rated a Soft 7 and with predicted rain on Saturday, you'd think we'd be playing on that sort of surface, if not worse. Tricky start to the day, some talented unbeaten runners getting around but to my mind, not really betting propositions, I'll be waiting until Race 6 to get stuck into Thought of That. First up run looked enormous, admittedly it was a leader bias track that day but regardless, I thought the run was full of merit. 2nd up now and 2000m, the one time Vic Derby favourite looks a good each way bet. The market has this as race in three, probably right. Tipping Thought of That to go forward and set the tempo and give a good kick.
Race 7, the mudlark Jungle Edge is in town and normally you'd be thinking anything in the Heavy range and it just wins. Concern here is Tavisan who will go forward and set the tempo as well, which may bring Jungle Edge undone. If Tavisan comes out, Jungle Edge wins, if not, I'll be backing Viridine with Damien Oliver on board after a nice win last start in Sydney.
Last race of the day, I'll just have a bit each way on Curragh, particularly on the wet and after a great run last start, 2.5 lengths of Heptagon and Haunted, good form for this! Not the best stats at Caufield but like the fact it's drawn wide, if the pattern of the day is suiting anything from the back, the $13 looks nice.
I'm almost putting the Sydney card in the too hard basket this week., very tough. I've found a couple with limited confidence. Race 4 of the day, I liked the first up win of a gelded Lewis who presents here 2nd up with Nash Rawiller in the saddle and early money $7 into $5. Chris Waller should have him ready to go second up, unlike Girl Tuesday, which has been transferred out of the Waller stable and across to Clarry Conners. Another one for Nash, backing this off a freshen up and the stable change, but this horse owes me so for full declaration of my position, I am chasing on this one in Race 7!
Outside of that, hard not to be impressed by the first up win of Kordia, but this is a step up and there looks to be good speed on paper and I am expecting it to go forward. Good horse, if it can get across and control the tempo, it will win but $2.90 is big unders, expecting it to drift and maybe it's a better betting proposition on raceday.
Racing in the sunshine state shifts away from Brisbane this week, we head north up the Bruce Highway to Caloundra for the Glasshouse Handicap. Betting for the day starts in Race 2, even money favourite Socialising should be too good for them and get the chocolates for us early. Race 7 is the Winx Guineas, what about her win on this track a few years ago, racecaller Alan Thomas couldn't believe it, don't blame him.
This is ridiculous, go on, watch it again.
Star of Michelin returned to form last week, jeez he's a tough one to catch. If he produces that same finishing burst again this week, I think he'll be too strong for this opposition. Drawn perfectly in barrier 4, the big Sunshine Coast straight should suit, I'm tipping him to go back-to-back in the space of 7 days.
Feature race of the day is the Glasshouse, whilst I'll be hoping for a drying track for this fella, I think they won't be mucking around this week and Steph Thornton will go handle bars down and take Deep Image straight to the front. Probably hasn't lived up to the hype this preparation but at his best, is much better than a $6 chance in this race, despite the 59kg impost. 1.7 lengths off Victorem just 2 starts back and with the only other real speed coming from outside him in Special Missile, I think Deep Image will find the front and the fence here. Soxagon is the clear danger, it'll get a good run in behind but tipping Deep Image to be travelling on the turn and give a good kick, go you good thing!
No full preview of the Gawler card but here's a multi for you all, The Bull McCabe, Sign of Ussuri, Getouttheway and Octane. $110-1, you can powerplay it and get it up to around $128-1 if you shop correctly. Some nice chances in South Australia this weekend!
Good luck and gamble responsibly!
