Grand final time in QLD Premier Rugby!
Has everybody recovered after last week’s Preliminary Final? Brothers pulling one out of the hat on the stroke of full-time to bury Bond.
Crikey, if you missed it, do yourself a favour and fast forward to near the end…
Right, and then there were two.
UQ vs Brothers, once again in Colts.
They’ve met twice this year, both times UQ has piled it on and dished out two fairly significant beatings.
Brothers will be buoyed by the last minute victory against Bond, but they’ve got plenty to work on if they want to beat this Uni team.
Fact of the matter is that these two clubs just love fighting it out in colts rugby.
The last time they met in a decider in Colts 1, it was 2017. A narrow victory to UQ that day when Brothers had the opportunity to win the game with a penalty kick after the siren.
Sadly for the Brethren, it missed.
Whilst in 2019, it was Brothers who got the chocolates in a tight preliminary final.
UQ's side is strong, their forward pack is immense, led by George Gibson, Tom Van Der Schyff and Sam Kelly-Knowles at the back of the scrum. In fact this UQ pack is very mobile and if they can get inside the attacking 22m, their hard to stop! Like all year, if the UQ pack do their work, that'll allow the backline of Macguire, Mellish & co to see some quick and early ball.
For Brothers, they'll be relying on the experienced front row to stand up like last week, while UQ will have to deal with openside Mitch Lowrie who will be quick on the ball and halfback George Tarabay who will ensure the defensive pressure of his side is up to the mark. A change in the backline, with Jake Pappin shifting back to 10, he and fullback Athen Waia are the two men that can create opportunities for Brothers.
Based purely on their meetings against each other this year, you’d be backing UQ after a really dominant season. Will this Brothers side stand up? You can certainly make a case for them at their best.
Hot conditions, 33 degrees in fact out at Ballymore on Sunday, it might come to which side is the fittest.
No doubt the filth will be filling the hill for this one, whilst the UQ faithful will be getting their positions early before the Premier Grade decider.
