QLD Maroons Team for Game 1

There's no hiding it, the form of the QLD sides has been nothing short of shithouse in 2020. The Titans have won their last 3 to make a late run and could finish as high as 9th, but for the Cowboys and Broncos it's been a fairly similar narrative. Shitloads of injuries, horrible inconsistency and they've both lost their respective coaches.

Once the NRL Premiership is decided on October 25, attention will turn to the best rivalry in sport, State of Origin.

Back in March, I wrote an article in which I picked the QLD state or origin side for 2020, today I thought it'd be a good idea to recap that and see where we might have got it wrong.

Here's the side we picked during the COVID lockout.

1. Kayln Ponga

2. Corey Oates

3. Michael Morgan

4. Dane Gagai

5. Valentine Holmes

6. Cameron Munster

7. Daly Cherry-Evans ©

8. Josh Papalii

9. Jake Friend

10. Dylan Napa

11. David Fifita

12. Felise Kaufusi

13. Josh Mcguire

Reserves: 14. Ben Hunt 15. Christian Welch 16. Jai Arrow 17. Corey Horsborough

What's happened since then?

Let's start with the backline, you'd think it is probably safe albeit Michael Morgan has not played much footy in 2020. He might be back for the Cowboys' Round 20 clash with the Broncos. Otherwise, I think the backline is fairly settled. Corey Oates I am not thrilled with but I can't see who else comes in?

The halves pairing is obviously the anchor of the side, if QLD are to win they will need these two blokes firing and firing big time!

The engine room, Josh Papalii, definitely. Dylan Napa, nup, no room for Big Papa. He'll come out and perhaps we could have a bit of a reshuffle, move Josh McGuire into prop and bring someone like a Patrick Carrigan or even young Storm lock Tino Faasuamaleaui into the side? Maybe too soon. Let's say Carrigan gets his chance at lock and McGuire makes the shift up front.

Hooker? We went with Jake Friend originally, but the form of Harry Grant is hard to resist, albeit again, he's young and lacks experience. Or do they go with Ben Hunt in the 9 jersey and make room for Moses Mbye on the bench? I think we'll go with Grant and leave Hunt on the bench, sadly I don't think there's room for Jake Friend in the 17.

That leaves the bench as Hunt, Faasuamaleaui, Christian Welch and Jai Arrow. Corey Horsborough is the other one to drop out but he's been missing for some time due to injury.

Here's the revised side - what do you think?
