NRL Top 8 for 2021

Updated: Jan 22

Well the cricket is pretty much done - bit of hit and giggle with the BBL still happening but for the most part, the summer is done and we now look toward footy season.

Ahhh footy season, isn't it just the best.

I've sat down and put together my Top 8 for the NRL this season, looking forward to some passionate response and debate.

I will be betting accordingly in the various different Top 4 & Top 8 markets on PlayUp, let's compare notes at the end of the season.

1st - Melbourne Storm

They're still the best. That spine of Papenhuyzen, Munster and Grant is ridiculous, arguably three of the form players of 2020 as the curtain was drawn down on the year.

They are going to be monsters this year - really keen on the Storm in 2021 - they just seem to keep getting better and better and Bellyache keeps producing some unreal talent.

2nd - Souths Sydney Rabbitohs

Lot's of positivity coming out of Redfern, plenty of expectation that uncle Wayne will put another rabbit out of the hat this year. A fit Latrell Mitchell will certainly help things, if the forward pack can get good front foot ball for Damien Cook, the Rabbitohs are going to be a big problem in 2021.

3rd - Sydney Roosters

Yes, they're still very good. A mediocre 2020 by their lofty standards, riddled by injury but they'll be there or thereabouts again this year.

4th - Penrith Panthers

2020's minor premiers and didn't they rally hard in the GF, only narrowly missing out on a famous comeback. A few big losses with their skipper James Tamou departing for the Tigers while Josh Mansour was shown the door in effect and headed to the Rabbitohs. Maybe a hangover from such a dominant season and heart breaking grand final loss? Perhaps.

They'll be good, but hard to be as dominant as last season, that Round 3 clash against the Storm, the grand final replay will be an absolute belter.

5th - Gold Coast Titans

The big winners in the off-season period, some huge signings including David Fifita and Tino Fa’asuamaleaui. 9th in 2020 and finished with a wet sail, they might even do better than 5th in 2021 - they'll be the big improvers this year.

Imagine if Cam Smith joined them? Wouldn't that turn the competition on its head pretty quickly. Not sure how likely that is, but they do have one spot left on the roster apparently!

Regardless, I am keen to watch the Titans do their thing in 2021 - it looks like they're poised to make some noise.

6th - Canberra Raiders

I had a bet with a dickhead mate of mine that the Raiders would make the Top 4 in 2020. For those who remember, we needed the Tigers to beat Parramatta in the last round for that to happen. They led until about the 67th minute, then the Eels came back.

Anyways, that aside, the Raiders didn't move too many pieces in the off-season, they'll get back Josh Hodgson and of course lose Nick Cotric and John Bateman. They'll be up there again, it's always hard to go down to a cold Canberra and win games.

7th - Manly Sea Eagles

Can they keep Tom Trbojevic on the field? If they do, then they can make an impact this year but without him, they lose a leg. Kieran Foran returns as well - where does he fit in?

Roosters and then Rabbitohs, that's rounds 1 & 2 for the Sea Eagles - a tough start! But think they have enough to scrape into the finals.

8th - Brisbane Broncos

Ok, calm down. I know - they were shit in 2021. But I'm a die hard Bronco fan and this selection has come from the heart. Will Kevvie turn things around? Yes, let's face it - it can't get any worse. Will he turn it around so much that they play finals footy, well, hopefully!

In Kevvie we trust.

Last - Parramatta Eels

I just don't like them.

Righto, time to hear from you all - who makes your Top 8 in 2021?
