NRL Review - King bloody Gutho

Updated: Jul 16, 2020

King Gutho is killing me! I continue to tip against the Eels and they just continue to get the job done, dear oh dear. The Knights looked as if they might have tied it up late with a try to winger Tex Hoy, sadly he was half a metre offside, heartbreak for Newcastle. Parramatta remain on top of the table through 9 rounds and it seems they just find a way to win every week. Sea Eagles on Sunday next week, you'd think they'd be too good for them as well. Parra fans smiling!

The weekend fixtures went according to most scripts you'd say. Favourites winning for the most part and what about the mighty Brisbane Broncos, back in the winner's circle, they would have had to re-learn the team song!

The Roosters dusted the Cowboys in Townsville on Thursday night with the injury count for the boys from Bondi continuing to grow, Jake Friend the latest casualty. Regardless, they were still too good for North Queensland who are struggling for consistency.

Friday night then dished up a couple of really good matches, the Warriors looked like they might make it back-to-back wins but just couldn't get the job done. What about Latrell Vs Josh Reynolds, that was good to watch and the Rabbitohs have now won 3 on the trot. Next week they have a harder assignment against the Knights but Souths are rolling. Oh, Dane Gagai, outstanding. 3 tries and 4 line breaks, he threw them on his back and had a night to remember.

Penrith, 56 points against the Sharks and sitting second on the table. 26-0 just before half-time, Cronulla fought back with 2 tries before the break to give them some hope, but it wasn't to be. The Panthers going right on with it and continuing their hot form. Speaking of hot form, no sorry, that isn't the right segue, but the Broncos beat the Dogs. You got to feel for Bulldogs coach Dean Pay, they seem to be trying but they just haven't got the right pieces to get the job done. They get the Dragons next week, maybe, something? The Broncos, can they make it 2 in a row next week against the Tigers or does that win against a poor side just mask the troubles they have? Boyd still in the centres, I'll continue to disagree with that, what does coach Seibold do next week when Kotoni Staggs is presumably right to go? The other Saturday night game, it's just the Storm doing Melbourne Storm things. People write them off, myself included, they just find ways to win, Bellyache and Smith, just steering the ship, it looks a bit too easy! Smith becoming the first ever player to win 300 games.

The Raiders? Hmmm, thought they were Top 4 contenders, serious contenders, but now they might just be happy to make the 8, huge game on Thursday against the Roosters upcoming, the grand final replay, let's hope Ben Cummins isn't officiating!

Sunday, a low scoring tussle between the Eels and Knights. Gutho pulled their pants down for the only try in the second half, while Mitch Pearce remonstrated with referee Sutton about a high tackle call. Kalyn Ponga copped more hits than The Beatles, he'll be sore today. How's he going? Last month of football hasn't been his best. Knights are playing good footy but just couldn't break the Eels defensive line, next weekend against the Rabbitohs will be a belter, 5th vs 6th.

In the other Sunday night game, the Dragons absolutely thumped the Sea Eagles. We thought that might happen didn't we? Dragons were well backed, starting favourites and dually delivered, 34-4. Ben Hunt started at Hooker and can we just agree that he won't be moving from there anytime soon? Zooms straight back into origin contention on that, the Dragons pack is now a force to be reckoned with. Bulldogs next week, look out, the Dragons might be on the way back. Well done Paul McGregor!
