Yesterday was Neale Daniher's 60th birthday.
Neale Daniher was diagnosed with MND in 2013, the average life expectancy thereafter is not great.
MND kills a third of people within a year and half of all people diagnosed within the first two years.
Since his diagnosis, Neale Daniher has been an advocate, a fundraiser and a downright inspiration.
It's probably more, but through Daniher's FightMND Foundation, they've raised in excess of $50m to raise awareness of the disease and to fund world-class research including drug trials to find an effective treatment and in time, hopefully a cure.
What is MND?
In Daniher's own words, everything is taken from you. Your athleticism, your movement, your life as you know it.
MND is a rare neurological condition that causes the degeneration of the motor system, which are the cells and nerves in the brain and spinal cord which control the muscles in our bodies.
Unfortunately for Neale, in his own words, it's too late for him, the disease will get him.
When Daniher was diagnosed, as he says, there was no treatment, no cure.
This is why Neale Daniher is an inspiration and a hero of mine.
Imagine being diagnosed with a terminal disease, what would you do next?
Prior to listening to the Neale Daniher way of doing things, I would have thought I'd get out the bucket list and start ticking them off.
Travel the world, go to all the great sporting events, fine dining - the lot.
That wasn't on the agenda for Neale Daniher.
Here's what I've learnt.
With everything that happens in life, even through the most adverse of times, life presents you with an opportunity.
The opportunity for Neale Daniher was to fight this thing and make it easier for the next person.
That'll be his legacy.
Through Neale Daniher, we've all learnt that life is about purpose, getting out of bed each morning to get better, to make people smile and to make a difference.
$50m and counting, Neale is fighting his own battle and he's fighting for others as well.
The outlook and the optimism, the ability to take a shitty situation and turn it, somehow, into a positive is something only few people can do.
It's stuff of legend, it's inspirational, it's Neale Daniher.
So to Neale Daniher, you don't know who I am, but I've watched just about every speech you've made on YouTube, you're an inspiration.
Happy 60th birthday and here's to many more to come.
