Did you hear? Brisbane got the AFL Grand Final. 24th October, 30,000 fans crammed into the Gabba for the showpiece event. Now we just need Powderfinger to do a John Farnham and come out of retirement for the pre-game. That'd be alright, wouldn't it.
Tonight we might find out whether the home town crowd will get to see their beloved Lions at the big dance. This appears to be a crunch game for both teams, the Lions just so-so of late, while the Magpies have shown improvement in recent weeks but still have plenty on the injured list and they've been beating up on teams not in the finals conversation.
What about the 2002 & 2003 Grand Finals between these two teams. Jeez the Lions were unstoppable, the whole town was on the band wagon. The midfield of Voss, Lappin, Black, Akermanis & Power. Among the best ever you'd think.
2002 it was a tight GF, 2003 the Lions annihilated the Pies fairly comprehensively.
With everything going on in Brisbane this year with the Broncos, the Lions have made a resurgence in popularity and support, I suppose it helps when you're winning.
The alarming stat for the Lions? They haven't beaten the Pies in 6 years! Shit! In fact, in Round 5 this year, it was a 62-point thrashing.
But this year at the Gabba, the Lions are undefeated, 6 from 6. And tonight it seems, fresh off a 12-day break, they get the chance to end that run of outs and get one up over Eddie & Bucks.
Not quite, but almost a must-win for Collingwood, which will give them plenty of motivation to leave nothing on the field tonight, they have had just the 5 days between matches following a 24-point win against Carlton.
The Pies too don't mind playing at the Gabba, 3 from 4 this year and an overall impressive record in the past decade.
Whatever happens, this'll be tight. If the Lions can kick straight, they might be too superior but I wouldn't bank on it. It'll be either team by less than 15 points, I'll say the home ground advantage and a 12-day freshen up might tell the difference, Lions by 10.
