This race is fucked

Plenty of poetic words have been written about the world’s greatest steeplechase. But none ring as true as those.

It’s Grand National day. Even if you don’t have a bet in the big race at Aintree, stay up late and enjoy the spectacle of 40 horses, running four and a half miles, and jumping 30 fences on the way. Like I said, it's completely fucked.

They jump at 02:15AEST.

If you are going to have a bet (let’s face it, you’re going to) good luck finding the winner. Form is tough to study when half the field has never run over the distance or at the track. The best we can do is throw a dart at some big-priced beasts and hope for the best.

Viuex Lion Rouge has run in four Grand Nationals before and finished every one of them. A huge achievement on its own. He also won the Becher Chase back in December over the same course and fences. In a race where so much needs to go your way to find a winner, that sort of consistency is like gold.

His rating is high and he’s 12 years old but 50/1 with plenty of each-way places on offer is appealing enough.

Other outsiders with chances are Farclas (20/1 – the trip is a worry), Magic of Light (20/1 – recent form not great but ran a stormer for second in this race in 2019, see video), and Ballyoptic (80/1 – needs to re-find his best form of a couple of years ago). I’ll be abusing the each-way markets and praying.

The only other tip on a big Saturday is Lisnagar Oscar in the fourth race at 00:35AEST. He fell at Cheltenham last month so hard to assess what sort of condition he’s in but this race should suit him and he’s better than odds of 9/1 suggest.

Big day. Big race. Have a big night and enjoy.

Ciao.
