Hats off to Souths Sydney

We're often quick to stick the boot into individuals or organisations when they stuff up, but it appears what the Bunnies have done with the handling of James Roberts is something to be celebrated.

Jimmy the Jet, at his best, one of the best centres in the game.

149 NRL games across 4 clubs & 3 origins for the Blues.

But now it seems, he may not play again in the NRL, well perhaps not for 2021 at least with Roberts' reportedly linked to just 1 club, the Newcastle Knights.

Souths Sydney released Roberts from the final year of his contract on compassionate grounds, a contract mind you that is worth $500,000/year.

Roberts walked away from the contract without having anything else on the table at the time, or at least that's what we believe to be true.

Roberts re-joined Souths, having previously been sacked by the club for off-field incidents on the proviso that he agreed to a one strike clause that would allow for his contract to be terminated.

When Souths questioned Roberts' commitment to the team earlier in the year, you'd think they had the option of getting rid of him.

But they didn't.

Instead, they reportedly spent close to $30,000 in psychological support for Roberts and intend to continue funding a welfare plan for Roberts over the next 12 months, despite the fact he won't be at the club.

How good is that.

Seriously.

Roberts' challenges with mental health have been widely documented, I hope he is on the mend but his decision to walk out on a $500,000 contract next year really puts his career in limbo.

Get him fit and healthy, both mentally and physically, and you've got one of the best centres in the game, let's hope he can re-capture that sort of form.

A tilt of the cap to Souths Sydney for the care and compassion they've shown in the handling of this situation.

What a classy organisation.
