Definitive guide to making money on the Melbourne Cup

Melbourne Cup Day!

The hardest day of the year to find a winner, yet the day that most people around the country have a wager.

They bring together big fields, pretty colours and the bookies normally win the lot. So let's find a few to make some money.

Here's your definitive Melbourne Cup Day guide for Flemington, for the most avid and social punter.

Flemington

Race 1 - 10:45am start - if you're in Melbourne & Sydney - and a fascinating first race. Ingratiating was very good on debut, while Marine One and Dosh have both trialled very well. Siding with the race experience but the other two wouldn't surprise.

Ingratiating - $2.25.

Race 2 - Don't mind the Sydney form here but not with the one you might think. If you backed Sweet Reply last start, you're probably still going through some form of counselling process. Think it'll get a lovely run in this and Damien Oliver may well get the first two winners. The other Sydney horse Joviality, it can win but the barrier won't help it's chance, Twain's Express next best.

Sweet Reply - $6.50

Race 5 - Looks to be all about the favourite here, Ain'tnodeeldun. The form from it's last start win in Adelaide was firmly franked on the weekend by Victoria Quay. Another one down from Sydney might be danger for J Mac, Acrophobic. Another bad barrier for McDonald but will appreciate getting back on the good track.

Ain'tnodeeldun - $2

Race 7 - The big one! The Melbourne Cup. Probably 5 or 6 that I think can win it.

Going with Prince of Arran after a slashing third in the Caulfield Cup and drawn perfectly for Jamie Kah. Could we see the second female win the Cup!?

Prince of Arran should be fairly close to the speed and should only need a bit of luck to get an uninterrupted run into the race. The dangers look to be Surprise Baby - who was arguably the run of the race last year and Master of Reality for Lloyd Williams that is reportedly in very good order.

Remember the 2019 running of the Cup? Prince of Arran and Master of Reality both looked the winner at one point or another.

Anthony Van Dyck, Verry Elleegant and Finche - who might be one of the forgotten horse - all have good chances in the race and I'll be having $5 on Warning as well at big odds. Hasn't had a great prep but you get the feeling that everything he's been has been working towards the great race.

Last year's winner Vow and Declare, well he doesn't appear like he's going well enough to do the repeat but again, Danny O'Brien knows a thing or two about training and he might have him peaking at the right time. Sadly, I can't see it happening.

Enjoy the Melbourne Cup!

Prince of Arran ($11) & Surprise Baby ($8) / Box Tri - 12, 4, 13, 1, 7, 11, 19

Race 8 - Sounding like a broken record potentially, but another Sydney raider looks hard to beat here, Purple Sector. In fact, I might even go a little boxed trifecta here. Galaxy Raider was good at The Valley and will need track conditions to suit but think it, Harbour Views and the topweight Homesman are the big chances.

Purple Sector - $3.60 / Box Tri - 15, 12, 8, 1

Race 9 - Love Music Bay over 1400m here at Flemington. $9 or thereabouts, this is the each way bet of the day. Our old mate Pikey might send her forward here from the wide barrier and make her own luck. Liked the run first up as well, think this is a great each way play - give it strength!!

Music Bay - $9

Race 10 - Let's hope we've built a nice bank by the last! Just love Craig Williams down the straight and particularly when he's drawn out, that means we'll back The Astrologist. Good overall record and although not overly well weighted in this relative to her rating, banking on her exploding fresh. William Thomas and Exhilarates are the obvious dangers.

The Astrologist - $5

Good luck, good punting & gamble responsibly.
