It is reported that after last Wednesday's Game 1 origin opener, Maroons coach Wayne Bennett had a bit of a laugh with Dane Gagai...
“He said 'f*** me, Gags, why don't you wear that Origin jersey under your Souths jersey.”
Bennett, of course Gagai's club coach @ Souths was obviously reacting to Gagai's outstanding performance in Game 1.
Gagai playing well at origin level, that's become an all too familiar thing! He just grows a leg when he puts the Maroon jersey on.
We blogged about that earlier in the week, you can read that here.
Gagai is contracted at Souths until the end of 2021, but he is now free to speak with other clubs.
Souths have some players on big money, the likes of Damien Cook, Adam Reynolds, Cameron Murray & Cody Walker.
You can throw into that list Latrell Mitchell, who is reportedly set to sign an extension to his contract worth $850,000/year.
This could leave Gagai on the outer and there's a whisper getting around town that the Cowboys loom as the front runner for his signature.
That'd be a good fit, there's definitely room for Gagai, probably in the centres you'd think. Justin O'Neill and Murray Taulagi finished off the year there, I am not sure if there's any new faces earmarked for the 2021 season.
203 NRL games, 14 appearances for QLD and 5 for Australia.
It's a fair resume for Gagai.
If Gagai could transfer his origin form back to club land week in week out, he'd be one of the best in the game, there's no doubt about it.
Signing Dane Gagai you get a wealth of experience and plenty of strike power in attack and at the age of 29 he's probably still got 4-5 years of his best football in him.
Dane Gagai in North Queensland - I like that!
